We are committed to teaching phonics and early reading through a variety of ways that best meet the needs of our children. In order to do this we use the LCP scheme to help plan phonics, that follows the Letters & Sounds framework.
In reading we try and provide fun, interesting books that go across genres and help our children to learn. We have a wide breadth of books such as: Oxford Reading Tree, Phonics, Songbirds, Read with Biff, Chip and Kipper, Floppy’s Phonics along with Rigby Star and some Collins Big Cat books.
As a part of our commitment to phonics and reading in 2013 we invested money (with the Friends help!) for our new library. We bought the latest titles in fiction and since then have continued to purchase more fiction and now a wider variety of non fiction books. Every week children from Year 1 upwards have a chance to choose and sign out a book using our Junior Librarian system, before returning it when they have completed it.
We have also improved our guided reading selection for Key Stage 2 to provide more up to date and relevant interesting books for the children.
