Thank you for taking the time to look at our school’s website. I am David Woodhouse, and have the privilege of being Chair of the Board of Governors at Poulton-le-Sands Primary School. I hope you will find the information on this website useful and informative.
Including myself, there are 14 governors who make up the Board of Governors. We are representatives from the school staff, parents of children in school, Lancashire County Council and foundation governors (elected by the Blackburn Board of Education and Morecambe Parish Church, Parochial Church Council).
As a church school we are a Voluntary Aided School. This means the Governors have responsibility for appointing staff, as well as making sure that the children who come to our school are given the best possible start in their education.
We come from a wide range of backgrounds and as such are able to share our skills and experiences when making the decisions that affect our school. We work extremely well together as a part of the team striving for excellence. This team includes the head teacher and her senior leadership team, all the staff, parents/carers and of course the children.
As a Board of Governors we meet each term. This is a legal requirement. We have several committees who look in more detail at the different aspects of school life, who in turn report to the Board of Governors each term.
As well as attending the meetings each term, governors are regularly in school helping in classes. We also look at the children’s work, ensure the classroom displays are effective and interview pupils about their work. We make sure that we have a healthy and safe environment. This all helps to enable the governors to ensure the standards are continually improving. As Chair I meet regularly with the head teacher.
